Rosacea is a skin condition that is characterized by reddened facial skin and acne-like sores. It can also cause swelling. Rosacea occurs mainly on the face, but can appear elsewhere on the body. Rosacea does not cause any physical damage, and is mainly harmless. However, those suffering from rosacea can have low self-esteem and issues with social interactions because of the embarrassment of this chronic skin condition.
WHO DEVELOPS ROSACEA?
While the main causes of rosacea remain unknown, dermatologists are in agreement that this condition involves the swelling of the blood vessels that are right underneath the skin. Rosacea occurs mostly in fair-skinned people between the ages of 30 and 50. Women suffer from it more than men, however, the men that do have rosacea have more pronounced symptoms.
WHAT ARE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF ROSACEA?
The characteristics of rosacea are a red or bulbous nose, acne-like sores or lesions, red skin, small visible blood vessels and burning or stinging skin. Rosacea is not contagious, and cannot be passed on from one person to another; however, it may be hereditary.
HOW CAN ROSACEA BE TREATED?
Although there is no known cure for rosacea, there are several ways to control it and its symptoms. A dermatologist can prescribe a specific topical skin care regimen, as well as oral medications. There are also Laser Treatments that can improve the redness and discoloration caused by this skin condition.
Another method that helps is determining your personal “triggers,” or the things that make your rosacea worse. Common triggers include alcohol, spicy foods, sun exposure, physical activities done in warm weather and certain skin care products.
