Summer Skin SOS Part 2: Why Summer Triggers Breakouts — and What You Can Do About It
If your skin tends to behave itself through winter and spring and then suddenly breaks out the moment summer arrives, there’s a reason for that.
Summer creates a perfect storm of conditions that can push even relatively clear skin toward breakouts — and for those already prone to acne, the warmer months can be worse.
“We see a noticeable uptick in acne-related visits during the summer,” says Richard Price MD, of Price Skin Care Clinic in Ridgeland. “Heat, sweat, and humidity are tough on acne-prone skin — but there are things you can do to manage it.”
Here’s what’s happening to your skin during the summer, and what you can do about it.
Why Summer Triggers Breakouts
Heat and humidity cause your skin to produce more oil. That excess oil, combined with sweat and dead skin cells, can clog pores quickly — creating exactly the conditions that lead to breakouts. Sweat itself isn’t the culprit, but when it sits on the skin for extended periods it creates an environment where acne-causing bacteria thrive.
Summer activities add to the problem. Tight athletic gear and equipment trap heat and sweat against the skin, causing a specific type of breakout called ‘acne mechanica’ — common on the back, shoulders, chest, and jawline. And if you’re reapplying sunscreen regularly as you should be, heavier formulas can contribute to clogged pores if they aren’t right for your skin type.
Habits and Products That Make It Worse
A few common summer habits can quietly aggravate breakouts:
• Skipping your regular skincare routine. Summer schedules get busy and routines slip. But inconsistency — especially skipping cleansing after sweating — allows oil and bacteria to accumulate on the skin.
• Using the wrong sunscreen. Not all sunscreens are created equal for acne-prone skin. Heavy, oil-based formulas can clog pores. Look for sunscreens labeled “non-comedogenic” — meaning they won’t block pores — and opt for lightweight, gel-based or mineral formulas where possible.
• Touching your face more often. Hot weather means more wiping and touching your face throughout the day, transferring bacteria from your hands to your skin.
• Over-washing or over-treating. When breakouts flare, the temptation is to scrub harder or pile on acne treatments. But over-washing strips the skin of its natural moisture, prompting it to produce even more oil in response.
Practical Strategies for Clearer Summer Skin
The good news is that summer breakouts are manageable with a few adjustments:
• Cleanse consistently — wash your face morning and night, and always after sweating heavily or wearing a hat or helmet.
• Switch to lightweight products — look for oil-free, non-comedogenic moisturizers and sunscreens suited to your skin type.
• Shower promptly after exercise — don’t let sweat sit on your skin any longer than necessary.
• Wear loose, breathable fabrics — especially during outdoor activities, to reduce friction and heat buildup against the skin.
• Stay hydrated — well-hydrated skin is better equipped to regulate oil production and recover from breakouts.
• Keep your hands away from your face — simple, but effective.
When Over-the-Counter Solutions Aren’t Enough
For mild summer breakouts, the strategies above and a consistent over-the-counter routine with ingredients like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide are often sufficient. But if your breakouts are persistent, painful, or covering a large area, it’s worth talking to a professional.
“Acne is one of the most treatable skin conditions we see,” says Dr. Price. “There’s no reason to spend a whole summer struggling with breakouts when effective prescription options are available.”
Summer breakouts are common — but they’re not inevitable. Understanding what triggers them and making a few simple adjustments to your routine can make a real difference this summer.
